We have used Imperial Carpet Care service several times throughout the years and they did a great job this time as always. The communication was easy and the service team was very professional. They helped removed some pet and coffee stains that have been there for a couple of years too. Highly recommend and would definitely hire again!

Truck-mounted hot-water extraction that pulls out the soil, allergens and odors vacuuming leaves behind.
- Bedrooms from $49
- Eco-friendly products
- 21 cities served
Residential steam carpet cleaning is what most San Diego homeowners mean when they ask for a “deep clean”: hot water, a cleaning solution and powerful suction working together to flush out the soil that daily vacuuming never reaches. At Imperial Carpet Cleaning we have done exactly that for more than 15 years and 4,500+ customers, from Point Loma bungalows to Clairemont family homes, using truck-mounted hot-water extraction and a zero-residue rinse.
This page explains how the process works, how it compares with dry and encapsulation methods or a rented machine, how we handle area rug cleaning for synthetic and wool rugs, and what to expect on stairs, hallways and traffic lanes. You will also find a simple prep checklist and honest answers about drying time and how often your carpet really needs attention. Our solutions are eco-friendly, non-toxic and safe for kids and pets, and most carpets are dry in 3–6 hours.
What’s included
- Pre-inspection and pre-vacuum of traffic lanes
- Spot and traffic-lane pre-treatment
- Hot-water extraction with zero-residue rinse

Our carpet process
- Inspect & pre-vacuumWe check fiber type, traffic lanes and spots, then dry-soil the heavy areas.
- Pre-treatTraffic lanes, spots and pet areas get the right pre-spray for each soil.
- Hot-water extractionTruck-mounted extraction rinses and pulls the soil out — no sticky residue left.
- Groom & dryWe groom the pile and set it up to dry in about 3–6 hours.
What “steam cleaning” really means: hot-water extraction
The phrase “steam cleaning” is a household name for hot-water extraction. There is no cloud of steam involved. Instead, heated water and a cleaning solution are injected into the carpet pile under pressure, loosening body oils, cooking grease, sand and fine dust that cling to every fiber. In the same pass, a vacuum strong enough to pull that dirty water back out removes it from the carpet instead of leaving it to soak into the pad.
We run our equipment from a truck-mounted unit parked outside your home. That matters for two reasons. First, the heat and suction are generated by the truck, not by a portable machine plugged into your wall, so the water stays hotter and far more of it comes back out. Second, the dirty water goes straight into a tank in the truck, not down your sink or into your backyard.
Our visit follows the same order every time:
- A walk-through to spot stains, pet areas, loose seams and fragile fibers.
- A pre-vacuum of traffic lanes so dry grit does not turn into mud.
- Pre-treatment of spots and traffic lanes, matched to what caused them.
- Hot-water extraction, followed by a zero-residue rinse so no sticky film is left to attract new dirt.
- Pile grooming so the fibers stand up and dry evenly.
That rinse step is the one people notice most. Carpet that was cleaned with too much detergent looks fine for a week and then turns gray in the hallways, because the leftover soap acts like a magnet for soil. A residue-free finish keeps carpet cleaner for longer between visits.
Hot-water extraction vs. dry, encapsulation and rental machines
Homeowners usually compare three alternatives. Here is how they stack up for a typical San Diego home.
Dry and low-moisture compounds. These methods spread a powder or damp compound over the carpet, brush it in and vacuum it back up. They are useful where a floor has to be walked on almost immediately. The trade-off is depth: they clean the upper part of the fiber well but do not rinse the base of the pile, where sand and fine dust collect in coastal and inland homes alike.
Encapsulation. A polymer cleaner is applied and agitated; as it dries it crystallizes around soil so the next vacuuming removes it. It works nicely as maintenance on commercial low-pile carpet. In a home with plush carpet, pets and kids, it leaves heavier soil and spills in place because nothing is flushed out.
Rental machines. A store-rented unit uses the same idea as hot-water extraction, but with far less heat and suction. The most common result is overwetting: water reaches the pad, the carpet takes a day or more to dry, and a musty smell or brown “wicking” stains appear as the moisture rises back to the surface. Many rental users also overdose the detergent, which leaves the carpet sticky.
Truck-mounted hot-water extraction is the method we recommend for residential carpet because it cleans the full depth of the pile, rinses away its own solution and recovers most of the water, which is why drying typically takes only 3–6 hours.
Area rug cleaning: synthetic and wool rugs
Area rug cleaning is part of almost every residential visit, and we clean rugs on site alongside your wall-to-wall carpet. Pricing is simple: a regular area rug starts at $49 and a wool area rug at $59.
Synthetic rugs made of nylon, polyester or polypropylene (olefin) handle hot-water extraction well. Polypropylene resists water-based stains but holds on to oily soil, so traffic areas on these rugs benefit from a targeted pre-treatment before the rinse.
Wool rugs need a gentler approach. Wool is naturally resilient and releases dirt readily, but it does not like high alkalinity or excessive heat, and some dyes can bleed if they get too wet. We test dye stability first, use a wool-safe solution, control the moisture and groom the pile so it dries in the right direction. Fringes are cleaned by hand rather than blasted.
Some rugs deserve an honest conversation before any water touches them: silk, viscose (often sold as “art silk” or bamboo silk), antique hand-knotted pieces and rugs with unstable dyes. We evaluate those on site and will tell you plainly if a rug should not be cleaned in the home.
A practical tip: put a rug pad under every area rug. It keeps the rug from sliding, reduces wear on the back and makes vacuuming more effective.
Stairs, hallways and traffic lanes
The parts of a home that look worst are rarely the bedrooms. They are the stairs, the hallway outside the kitchen and the path from the sofa to the patio door. These traffic lanes collect soil faster than the rest of the room, and grit acts like sandpaper on the fibers, so they are also where carpet wears out first.
Stairs get their own attention. Each tread is pre-vacuumed, the nose of every step is pre-treated, and we clean the risers and edges with a hand tool rather than a floor wand so the corners and the strip against the wall come clean too. One set of stairs is $69. Hallways are priced by size, from $29 for a small hallway or landing to $45 for a large one.
Gray traffic lanes often come back to a much more even color after pre-treatment and extraction. Where the fibers themselves are crushed or frayed, cleaning cannot rebuild them, and we will tell you so before we start rather than after.
How often to clean, and how long carpet takes to dry
For most homes we recommend professional cleaning every 6–12 months. Lean toward every six months if you have dogs or cats, small children, allergy sufferers or a busy entryway that opens straight onto carpet. Lighter-use homes, such as a couple without pets, can stretch closer to a year. Regular vacuuming (twice a week in high-traffic rooms) is what keeps the gap between visits reasonable.
Carpets usually dry in 3–6 hours. Thick, plush carpet and cool, humid days near the coast sit at the longer end; low-pile carpet on a warm inland afternoon at the shorter end. You can help by:
- Running ceiling fans or the air conditioning, or opening windows on a dry day.
- Leaving the foil or blocks under furniture legs in place until the carpet is fully dry.
- Walking on it only in clean socks for the first few hours.
- Keeping pets off freshly cleaned areas until they are dry to the touch.
Prep checklist before we arrive
A little preparation makes the visit faster and the result better:
- Pick up small items, toys, shoes and anything stored on the floor, including under beds if you want those areas cleaned.
- Move fragile or valuable pieces such as floor lamps, electronics and plants off the carpet.
- Tell us about any stains you already tried to treat, and what you used on them.
- Point out pet accident areas so we can check them and treat with enzymes where needed.
- Make sure there is parking close to the entrance for the truck and a door we can run the hose through.
- Plan for pets and small children to stay in another room during cleaning and while the carpet dries.
Pricing is per room: bedrooms from $49, living rooms from $55, a living–dining combination at $109 and a studio at $179. We accept cash, credit card, Venmo or Zelle, and same-day or next-day service is often available. Call 858-688-2246, Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 5 pm.

Carpet Cleaning FAQs
Is steam cleaning the same as hot-water extraction?
Yes. “Steam cleaning” is the everyday name for hot-water extraction. Heated water and a cleaning solution are pushed into the carpet and immediately vacuumed back out together with the loosened soil. No actual steam is used. We add a zero-residue rinse at the end so no soap film is left behind to attract new dirt.
Will hot-water extraction shrink or damage my carpet?
Wall-to-wall synthetic carpet, which is what most homes have, handles hot-water extraction very well. Problems usually come from overwetting, which is common with rental machines. Our truck-mounted equipment recovers most of the water, so the pad is not soaked. For wool, we adjust the solution and the moisture level and test the dyes first.
How long until I can walk on the carpet again?
You can walk on it right away in clean socks, but we suggest keeping traffic light until it is dry, usually 3–6 hours. Avoid street shoes for the rest of the day, and do not put furniture back until the carpet is fully dry. Fans, air conditioning or open windows on a dry day speed things up.
Can you clean my area rugs during the same visit?
Yes. We clean area rugs on site while we are there for your carpet. A regular area rug starts at $49 and a wool area rug at $59. We check fiber type and dye stability first. Silk, viscose and antique hand-knotted rugs are evaluated individually, and we will tell you honestly if one should not be cleaned in the home.
How often should residential carpet be professionally cleaned?
Every 6–12 months for most homes. Households with pets, small children or allergies do best closer to every six months, while quieter homes can go about a year. Waiting too long lets grit wear down the fibers in traffic lanes, which is damage no cleaning can reverse.
Are your cleaning solutions safe for kids and pets?
Yes. We use eco-friendly, non-toxic solutions that are safe for children and pets once the carpet is dry, and the zero-residue rinse means nothing sticky is left in the fibers. We still recommend keeping kids and pets in another room while we work and until the carpet has dried.
Do I need to move my furniture before you come?
Clear small items, toys, electronics and anything fragile. Large furniture such as beds, dressers and sofas can stay where it is; we clean around it and place protective tabs under the legs of pieces we shift. Leave those tabs in place until the carpet is dry to avoid rust or dye marks.
What does residential steam carpet cleaning cost?
Pricing is per room: bedrooms from $49, master bedrooms $55, living rooms $55, a living–dining combination $109, a set of stairs $69 and a studio $179. Hallways run $29–$45 depending on size. Pet treatments and heavy stain work are quoted after we see them. Prices may vary without notice.
